London's world-famous Tower Bridge has long drawn admiring glances as an engineering marvel of the Victorian age - and the English capital has Glasgow to thank.
It's one of the world's most iconic and instantly recognisable bridges - and it was built by a Glasgow firm.
They were awarded the contract to build the famous link following the successful completion of the Tay Bridge and Forth Bridge, which gave the firm an international reputation and saw William Arrol rewarded with a knighthood. As the website explains, the bridges steel plates were supplied by were supplied by The Steel Company of Scotland, A and J Stuart and Clydesdale, the steel stairs inside the towers were cast in one of Kirkintilloch’s best-known foundries, the Lion Foundry, while the ornamental cast iron parapets and decorative panels for the bridges footways were produced by Fullerton, Hodgart and Barclay of Paisley.
