need more frequent watering during and following flowering in hot, dry weather. Pumpkins and squash, however, seem to need less frequent watering for an acceptable crop.
Happily, some plants can get through all but the worst droughts without watering – most lawns, wildflower meadows, established tree and shrubs and carrots, parsnips and most herbs. Established perennials on deep loamy or clay-loam soils can also fend for themselves, but such soils are rare. More often a soak every two weeks will keep perennials going. In these cases, replanting with drought-tolerant plants is a wise move.
Domestic wastewater, from kitchen and bathroom sinks, baths and showers, can be used in Britain to water garden plants, as long as excessive amounts are not applied for long periods, as soil damage or pollution might occur. Ideally choose water where few or no additives and no bleaching agents are added. Water used for washing and preparing vegetables is ideal.
Water butts can work well when they are replenished by rain – but in prolonged dry spells, they can soon be exhausted.
