Perhaps the most lurid stories, both in terms of the language and the content, have concerned the views that those in the inner circle had of one another.
From before the first lockdown, it was clear that the government believed the public were incapable of responding appropriately to the pandemic because they were too stupid or too weak – or both. You couldn’t reason with them because they couldn’t cope with too much information; you couldn’t support them because too much support would be misappropriated.when Jeremy Hunt asked Matt Hancock why more support was not given to people to self-isolate when testing Covid positive.
We considered a complex web of potential factors. Was it that they distrusted and had contempt for us too – especially those of us who spoke out at their more egregious errors? Was it that they failed to understand scientific principles and concepts and that we failed to communicate them clearly?
