The Government knows it is playing politics with trans lives over the Gender Bill – it just doesn’t care
The legislation won’t have any material impact on anyone who is not trans. Yet fearmongering has resulted in an increasingly hostile environment for us‘Scottish Secretary Alister Jack and the UK Government know full well that this bill is not going to have the impact they claim it will,’ writes Ellie Gomersall is the admin, and although I’m probably being a bit facetious, I think there’s certainly some truth in that.
I came out as trans about five years ago, when I was 18. My family and friends were all wonderfully supportive, which meant that coming out was a moment of joyous liberation for me. In the years that have followed since, being trans has played a smaller and smaller role in my life and my identity. My bank accounts, driving license, passport, and all other legal documents correctly refer to me as a woman – with one exception.
This is because marriage and death certificates will, in most cases, record a trans person’s gender as it appears on their birth certificate. It’s important to me that if I want to get married, that day should be as happy and special as possible, without me worrying as to whether I’ll be recorded as a husband or a wife. It’s also important to me that I’ll have dignity in death when I pass away, by ensuring that my death certificate records me as a woman.
The problem is that the current process to obtain a gender recognition certificate is so convoluted, intrusive and inaccessible, that it’s actually impossible for many trans people to obtain one. This is because the current process requires me to submit a huge amount of evidence to a panel of so-called experts, who then get to decide whether I’m a man or a woman.
