Bailey Smith, who also goes by his stage name Doc Brown, is a supporter of End Youth Homelessness, the charity i is supporting in its Christmas appeal this year

“I was on the coal face of this, working with young offenders and running a charity for young asylum seekers and refugees,” he says, “and I was fundraising for my own wages for the vast majority of the time. Then, during my time working with homeless people and young people at risk of homelessless, it was the same.

Bailey Smith, who lives in east London, started in youth work at the age of 21 in the early 2000s, when he says there was an air of optimism in the country for people like him, just beginning their careers. “Now I have my own teenage children and even with the basics of love and shelter, their futures are uncertain. I can’t imagine what the challenge must be like to be a young person in 2022 or 2023, but I really struggle to imagine how scary it must be to add homelessness into that mix.

“It’s one of our biggest fears as a human, to lose shelter. It’s scary. We know there’s a crisis, and it’s not about everyone giving up hundreds of pounds of their hard-earned money, but it’s about giving something if that’s at all possible, about being aware of what’s going on with our children, who are the future, and deserve so much better.

You might not see a homeless teenager in a doorway, but they’re still without safe shelter or any stability. “They’re jumping around from place to place, spending a couple of nights on a friend’s sofa, then they feel they’ve outstayed their welcome, so they go and sleep in a bus shelter for a night or two. Imagine the pain and shame of young people in this situation, during what should be their best days.
