The GBBO tent might seem traditional, with its old-school recipes and Union Flag bunting, but it’s a place where people of all walks of life combine their culture, stories and identities with a shared passion.
Part of the show’s huge appeal is that it’s a competition that somehow manages to feel kind. Contestants are often seen helping each other and, while winning is the aim, it’s very much about people doing the best they can do.
On American competition shows, there is often a huge cash prize and contestants are heard saying things like “I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to WIN”. But in that sense,feels stereotypically British: is there a phrase which sums up our national psyche better than “it’s the taking part that counts”?
Michael Chakraverty, pictured with presenter Sani Toksvig in the Bake Off tent, was a contestant in series 10 in 2019 when he was 26, thinks the wholesome nature of the competition is the driving force behind its success. “a competition, but the competition tends to be between the baker and themselves. All the other bakers are aware of that, so they want to help each other achieve their best,” he says.about winning: it’s about proving to yourself that you’ve done the best that you can do.
