There is an entrenched gap in work prospects across south-east Queensland, with unemployment rates in some inner-urban parts of Brisbane less than half those of outlying areas.
The unemployment rate in both the Brisbane East and Brisbane North statistical districts was 2.6 per cent on an annual average basis in the 12 months to June – the lowest in the city. Next best was Brisbane South at 3 per cent. However, the annual average unemployment rate in Ipswich, west of Brisbane, was 5.9 per cent during the same period, while in the outer southern region of Logan-Beaudesert, it stood at 5.8 per cent.
The Gold Coast had an unemployment rate of 2.8 per cent in June on an average annual basis, down 1 percentage point compared with a year earlier. Unemployment in the Gold Coast region has improved rapidly since peaking at 7.2 per cent in March 2021. “There are so many jobs still available across Queensland that if you lose your job in the current environment, you can expect to find another one reasonably easily.”
