There are, of course, glaring problems with this theory. Chief among them is that many Europeans can indeed smell rain, fresh-cut grass and more. Language probably doesn't account for any would-be variations between the noses of Europeans and Americans, though, says Rachel Herz a neuroscientist at Brown University in the US who studies the psychological effects of smell.
