They are among the first 50 to close across the country

Asylum seekers being housed at some hotels in Greater Manchester will have to leave within months as the government seeks to end the costly use of this accommodation. At least two hotels in the city-region - one in Wigan and another in Rochdale - will be closing.

READ MORE: The big Labour policy you probably won't see on many election leaflets in Greater Manchester next yearLast month, more than 3,500 people signed a petition, and 100 people gathered at Wigan Town Hall in protest against the decision to house asylum seekers in a hotel in Standish. It is just two and a half miles from another hotel that has been used for the same purpose.

"The leader, Councillor David Molyneux MBE, and chief executive, Alison Mckenzie-Folan, have continued to write to the Secretary of State for Immigration to voice the council’s and community’s concerns about the suitability of accommodation in Standish and the proximity of both hotels to each other. The Manchester Evening News understands that another hotel in Rochdale which is being used to house asylum seekers will also be closing. There is at least one hotel in Oldham housing asylum seekers, but the council would not confirm whether it will remain open.

Earlier this year, Trafford council was told a hotel in Hale would be used to house asylum seekers. Salford council was informed that a hotel in the city would also be used for this purpose, but the location of the hotel has not been identified on grounds of public safety. The Home Office says it has notified local authorities, MPs and the accommodation providers, informing them that the first 50 hotels temporarily accommodating asylum seekers will be exited as part of the move to return hotels to their 'proper use'. These hotels will be gradually handed back to hoteliers by the end of January 2024, with the first of these expected to be exited in the coming days.
