Taking the wrong debit or credit cards on holiday can charge you up to £23 when spending just £100. Here's how to beat rip-off fees
Don't let rip-off charges for using your bank card abroad can take a bite out of your holiday budget – follow our expert tricks to beat foreign spending fees. Whether you’re paying with your card in shops and restaurants or taking cash out of ATMs, the charges can really mount up.
With one of the worst cards, if you tapped it 20 times to buy drinks, snacks and souvenirs during your trip, you'd be hit with £23 in fees on £100 of spending. On some of its credit cards, MBNA, for example, charges a 5% cash withdrawal fee, plus a 2.95% non-sterling transaction fee for taking out money in a foreign currency.
But unlike MBNA the withdrawal fee is a minimum of £4, so if you drew out £10 you’d lose £4.30 in fees.Aqua and Lloyds Bank also have cash withdrawal fees of 5% and non-sterling fees of 2.95% .
