Four asylum seekers have taken government to court - and the costs are set to rise further

The Home Office has spent more than £350,000 defending the use of RAF Wethersfield as asylum seeker accommodation in court,The department is currently embroiled in a legal challenge in the High Court over the use of the site, brought by four asylum seekers who had been housed there.

However, the costs may still increase as the verdict has not yet been returned and the Home Office says the legal proceedings are “ongoing”.What is RAF Wethersfield – and why is it controversial? The 800-acre site, surrounded by barbed wire, is located two miles from the nearest village, Wethersfield, though limited mini-bus services run to neighbouring towns such as Braintree and Chelmsford.

Mr Solomon said that asylum seekers should have “safe and dignified” accommodation as they wait on their claims, but that there had been “an excessive use of military sites and hotels, where people are stuck for months and sometimes years, unable to properly settle, banned from working and struggling with poor mental health”.
