🟠 AlexHorne's self-referential, musical show within a show has low stakes, but is quietly charming ⭐⭐⭐
. “I can’t be the little assistant anymore – I want to be in charge,” Horne declares, as he embarks on an odyssey to become the host of his own programme.set, leaning into Davies as a charismatic tyrant, while Horne nurtures a well of resentment that he later takes out on his faithful bandmates.
Those bandmates – Joe Auckland, Mark Brown, Will Collier, Ben Reynolds and Ed Sheldrake – have been performing together as The Horne Section for more than a decade, both as a live comedy act and in their own Radio 4 series. Just likeWe see Horne subjected to a catalogue of disrespect: his dressing room is labelled “Taskmaster’s Assistant”, he’s forced to sign photos on Davies’ behalf, and everyone expects him to do their laundry.
He devises a plan to change his fortunes – a musical chat show where he’ll finally be the host. The show is accidentally commissioned by disdainful Channel 4 executive Ash and from there, we follow Horne’s jumbled attempts to make the show a success, as he films it inside his fictional home. As you’d expect, the band’s music is woven through the show. We see them in their rehearsal room, in songs that advance the plot, and in more polished music videos made for the chat show.
There’s a lack of logic at times: rehearsal room footage is used to break up the action, but only occasionally connects to the surrounding material.
