Vance easily overcame Tim Walz in this gratingly civil vice presidential candidates' debate
Senator JD Vance, left, and Governor Tim Walz shake hands at the end of the vice presidential debate hosted by CBS News in New York : the result of a lot more match practice as a speaker and Walz’s evident nervousness with the format, his snowy head often bent over notes and forehead wrinkled in concentration.
Walz is essentially a support act for Harris. Her decision to choose him as running mate has left other more experienced bidders for the deputy role grousing that he lacks the charisma and verve to bring wavering voters over the line. For Vance, conversely, the limelight was a chance to establish himself on a national stage in the role described to me by one of his close acolytes as “the Dauphin, who can take the Maga project forwards, win or lose”.
Where Walz scored best was on subjects like the 6 January riot on Capitol Hill, which forced his opponent into saying that his boss had urged “peaceful protest” – although there is no evidence that he did so and much to the contrary. We held our breath as the topic of immigration loomed to see what would happen to the Trump breakout hit: “They’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats.” It gave Walz, in full former teacher mode, the moment to scold his opponent for “dehumanising and villainising” incomers.
