What’s the first thing you look at when you pick up a book? The title? The author? The cover design? The heaps of praise listed on the back attributed to famous authors? The star ratings from newspapers? Though there has been much discussion in recent years about the role of the critic in the internet age, one area where they definitely remain relevant is on the cover of books. Here, as on a poster for a film or an album, prospective readers will find reassurance that the £11.99 they’re about to spend will grant them a fulfilling experience. Or at least, that’s what should happen.

Of course we know that book-jacket praise, be it from publications or individuals, is carefully chosen by the publisher for marketing purposes – it’s all readers have to go on when browsing for new titles. It is common practice for publishers to select the most flattering quotes they can in order to sell their book. But this week, it has caused a scandal.

A new edition is a great opportunity for publishers to fill the book jacket with glowing endorsements from prestigious publications; sure enough, this one has five. “Part quest, part adventure … masses of passion, masses of wisdom” –.
