A statement has been issued by the Royal Family on behalf of the new King.
In a tribute to his late mother Queen Elizabeth, King Charles III described her death this afternoon as a "moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family".
He wrote: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and much loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. "During this period of mourning and change, my family will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held."
The Queen had been the ruling monarch since she ascended the throne in 1952, her passing follows that of her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99.It said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. "The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
