Searing heatwaves piles pressure on Lancs water supply as river levels drop dramatically
Experts say low river flows and dry soils are putting landscapes under stress and could threaten supplies later this year,. The dry conditions have followed below average rainfall in parts of the country since October last year, with the recent heatwave piling on the pressure on water supplies.
Water levels at Haweswater for this time of year are normally between 21.56m and 31.39m, and on Monday, were at 25.09m and dropping, despite being in a normal range for the season. Although they were reported to be on the rise at the idyllic location again today , more hot spells could see the long lost village reappearing.
Meanwhile, concerns were flagged up at a couple of places across the region, with residents in Charnock Richard reporting seeing five water tankers at Charnock Richard Bridge today, with much speculation as to why, and a sad discovery dead fish in a pond in Skelmersdale.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “Low rainfall over the last few weeks has resulted in water levels in key reservoirs being lower than normal for this time of year. The Environment Agency is working closely with United Utilities to help them manage the water supplies across North West England and minimise any potential impacts to people and the environment should the dry weather continue.
