Our panel of writers look at the Women's World Cup, the impact of the Lionesses and preview Sunday's final against Spain
Chris: There have been several to be honest. I loved the way Japan played and it was very different than what we’re used to seeing but that’s refreshing and we should celebrate that diversity with the way they were effective by using technical ability and speed rather than physical prowess.
Hannah: Without a doubt, it has to be Linda Caicedo’s goal against Germany in the group stages and pretty much that entire game in general. It was incredibly tense and remains probably the biggest giant killing at this tournament as Colombia got one over the second-highest ranked team in the world. It’s a moment I’ll remember when I think about this World Cup as the 18-year-old cut inside and curled a fantastic effort into the top corner.
Laura: It has to be Jess Carter. We’ve been seeing glimpses of what she can do at Chelsea, and in the Arnold Clark Cup, but this tournament we’ve seen her blossom. With the absence of Leah Williamson, it was a question mark on what our backline would even look like - let alone cope - but Warwick’s own Jess Carter has stepped up when her Lionesses needed her.
Hannah: I think we saw the impact the Euros win had on WSL football and Aston Villa were a real beneficiary of that. Their attendances were growing last season and already the club are opening the Holte End at Villa Park for their opening league game against Manchester United at the beginning of October, which is something they didn’t do last term.
