The Fox and Pine in Oldham has been named ‘Best Pub of the Year’ in Rochdale, Oldham and Bury by CAMRA three years in a row
On first glance, stepping into the Fox and Pine pub in the centre of Oldham is a bit like walking into a quirky antique’s shop full of nick nacks and oddities. Everywhere you look, there are signs, puppets, pots, and a large number of foxes dotted around every part of the walls. It's anything but subtle.
But despite the influx of awards that keep on coming in, Chris, 49, remains humble about the pub’s successes. When asked what the secret to his success is, he says it’s all to do with years of experience in pubs he and his wife have between them. “I wanted to leave Wetherspoons and start my own real ale pub. The plan was always to have five little pubs but the lockdown set those plans back. I’ve always been into my ale and that’s what this pub is all about really.”
“The regulars will often go on holiday and bring back forks and all sorts featuring foxes. One guy came in once and gave us this big painting of a fox. I’ve never seen him since.” And that deep relationship the pub has with the customers began long before the Fox and Pine even opened its doors. During lockdown, Chris and Michelle were part of an online pub called The Isolation Inn, where people would come together for virtual quiz nights and concerts from the comfort of their homes. The pub’s Facebook group had 30,000 followers after just six weeks. While that is no longer needed, the pair continue to host events and work closely with the community.
