Inside the tiny radio station pulling in superstar guests and giving a voice to it community
Hello In side a makeshift studio in Hulme, huddled around pieces of rented DJ kit and sound equipment, a group of music lovers came together. They were attempting to create something unique and new.
"The initial launch of Peace FM was based around the Peace Weekend, the gun amnesty and what was happening within the community at the time. It was about having a voice and giving a platform to the Black community here in Manchester,” station manager DJ Julia Burke told Adam Maidment. And it’s developed into a stomping ground for talent - both artists and presenters. They include Simone Riley, known on Legacy 90.1 as Miss Diva, who combines her presenting duties with a full time job at BBC Radio Manchester.
And later this month it will mark its 15th anniversary with a huge party at the Lowry Hotel headlined by Shola Ama. It will be a chance to celebrate a remarkable grassroots story. Weather etc Thursday: A yellow weather warning for ice is in place overnight in Greater Manchester with temperatures set to drop to -1C.
