Remembering the Manchester Dogs' Home fire 10 years on
Hello On Monday, photographer Sean Hansford and I spent the morning at Manchester Dogs’ Home in Harpurhey. We’re both dog-lovers, so on the face of it it wasn’t the hardest job we’d ever been given.
On Monday we met long-serving staff member Colin Ballance. He lives right next to the home, so when the fire broke out he was the first person on the scene. And it happened almost immediately. Harpurhey church hall opened its doors and began taking. And the next day young children began turning up at the gates offering up their pocket money.
The money allowed the sanctuary to build back bigger and better. Where the fire broke out there's now a series of outdoor exercise and agility areas. ‘"And in continuing our mission to care for those dogs who are most in need, we hope we repay that kindness every single day.”
