But neighbours in Levenshulme and Burnage - home to 14 LTN streets - then said it had ‘transformed' their neighbourhood. Local Facebook groups are rife with often angry threads complaining about the planters, so much so that one admin called for an amnesty on new posts about the issue. And an online petition calling for the trial to be scrapped has attracted more than 1,000 signatures. Manchester Council say the aim is to create a ‘safer, more welcoming and more environmentally friendly neighbourhood’ but as a trial, it may be subject to change. More than 3,500 people recently signed a petition, and 100 people gathered at Wigan Town Hall in protest against the decision to house asylum seekers in a hotel in Standish. It is just two and a half miles from another hotel that has been used for the same purpose.

More than 150 Muslim Labour councillors have urged Sir Keir and the party's Deputy Leader, Ashton MP Angela Rayner, to back an ‘immediate ceasefire’ in Gaza. A number of vandals and thieves have already been prosecuted and penalty charges have been increased. Programme bosses say better tracking and monitoring of the bikes will help prevent damage in the future.
