The full story, from crime reporter John Scheerhout

Hello, Manchester’s headlines over the last few days have been dominated by stories of Traveller and Gypsy teens who were pushed onto trains and forced to leave the city centre in what some are labelling a ‘heavy-handed’ police response at the weekend.

Greater Manchester Police have stood by their actions, saying the controversial dispersal order was made 'due to intelligence' that groups of people were en route to Manchester on trains 'causing antisocial behaviour', with similar reports of trouble in the city centre already coming in. But they have faced heavy questioning over the decision. It follows claims a 13-year-old girl ended up ‘hysterical’ in Grimsby after she was ‘pushed’ onto a train, with no idea where she was headed. A number of other Travellers have reached out to the Manchester Evening News to share their stories - including a brother, who said his 14-year-old sister came back ‘in tears’ and asking ‘what did I do wrong?’.

It’s times like this that the need for well-informed, honest local reporting is at its greatest, to try and understand exactly what happened on occasions like Saturday afternoon. Our crime reporter John Scheerhout has put together this detailed look at what we know happened and why, taking accounts from those impacted, police sources, and public officials.
