The Leafs are 1-11 on the power play through three games this time around against the Boston Bruins.
The real problem for the power play in the playoffs boils down to one pretty simple fact: Their stars don’t score. Not enough. Not nearly as much as they do during the regular season. The numbers over the years are kinda shocking. has scored only five power-play goals in 53 career playoff games. has buried only three in his 34 playoff games as a Leaf. , who has yet to play in this postseason, scored only five times in his first 50 playoff games.
What’s the Leafs’ best alternative in that case, if the Matthews one-timer isn’t available? It’s Nylander, who hasn’t played yet this series and wasn’t even on the No. 1 unit in last year’s playoffs. Matthews, who led the team with 18 power-play goals during the regular season, has landed only three shots on goal on the power play against the Bruins so far. He tends to land fewer shots in the playoffs year after year.
