Nestled in woodland and tucked away behind the college which bears its name, Hopwood Hall could be one of Greater Manchester's finest gems.
It's a mammoth task - but one that Hopwood is determined to see through. The building is now close to being fully stabilised, the roof is almost complete, and attentions are turning to the hall's grand interior. They are working with master craftspeople, experts from Historic England and the team of dedicated volunteers who have already been working on the hall's restoration. Sophie Norton, sector skills manager for Historic England, said: "There is a severe heritage construction skills shortage whichever way you look at it.
James Downward, from Radcliffe, was aware of the building's presence as he studied at Hopwood Hall College. Now, the 21-year-old is working on panel mouldings, which is one of the many intricate tasks taking place in the restoration. Hopwood is hoping to transform his ancestral home into a thriving arts and culture venue. Dedicated volunteers are firmly behind the vision.
