GWS Giants star Chloe Dalton wants AFLW to piggyback on the success of Australia’s soccer World Cup stars, starting with Sunday’s derby clash against the Sydney Swans.

Chloe Dalton broke new ground when she was part of the Australian side which won the inaugural women’s rugby sevens Olympic gold medal in Rio in 2016.

“I think so often there’s this real hype and adrenaline and emotion surrounding these big events, but it’s so important for people to know and understand the avenues that they can continue to support women’s sport. And coming to watch games of AFLW is such an easy way to do it.” The Giants won last year’s inaugural Sydney derby by 47 points, one of four wins for GWS last season. The Swans went winless in their debut year.

It wasn’t the tidal wave of support for the Matildas that impressed Dalton the most, more how accessible the tournament made sport to those who hadn’t previously taken an interest.
