But when it comes to killers with medical backgrounds exploiting their professional status to horrific ends, Letby is by no means short of company. Over a two-month spree, she targeted young patients in the children’s ward at Grantham and Kesteven Hospital, Lincolnshire.Her victims ranged in age from seven weeks to five years old, though the four who died were all babies.
Staff became suspicious of the high number of cardiac arrests on the ward after the death of Allitt’s fourth victim, 15-month-old Claire Peck, and the killer was caught after detectives found she was the only nurse on duty during the episodes.Colin Norris, from Glasgow, was dubbed Scotland’s ‘Angel of Death’ after being convicted in 2008 of murdering four women and attempting to murder one more – also while working as a nurse.
