The Met should never have closed the Stephen Lawrence murder case, says senior officer

The Metropolitan Police should never have closed the investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, the head of the UK’s black police association has said His comments come as a sixth suspect has been named for the first time

Mr Severs was misidentified by the murder investigation team, a failure the Met has called a “significant and regrettable error”.

“What is infuriating about this latest revelation is that the man who is said to have led the murderous attack on my son has evaded justice because of police failures and yet not a single police officer has faced or will ever face action. Mr Driscoll, a former detective chief inspector, led the team which secured the only two convictions in the Stephen Lawrence murder case to date.

Mr George said members of the NBPA were shocked at the level of detail Mr Driscoll went into about “the mistakes and deliberate actions to undermine the investigation” when he spoke at the organisation’s conference to mark the 30th anniversary of Stephen’s death earlier this year.
