Colin Neil was found not guilty of murdering his father by reason of insanity
Colin Neil loved his dad. They were ‘peas in a pod’, according to his mum, who would watch on as the pair launched into debates about what they had read or watched on TV.
Their debates were always good natured, and didn’t end in acrimony. That Colin would go on to kill his father, in the house in Timperley which the three shared, seems incredible. Colin had even been sectioned twice before the killing. On Friday, he was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. The case raises serious questions about whether more could have been done to prevent such a horrifying killing.
However their relationship did not last, and in 2008 he lost his business and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Colin moved back to his parents’ house for a time, but kept the flat and eventually returned there. But he was often told it was likely to be a sleep disorder. He was given medication to try and help him ‘relax’, but the night terrors continued. As the world entered lockdown in March 2020, Colin was back with his parents in Timperley and his problems continued.
During these horrifying episodes, Colin would bang his head against the wall until he bled, and he would howl. He would believe he was God, and his parents' faces would become ‘disfigured’. After getting up, Colin said he didn't feel well and was dizzy. Monica took him outside and offered him a glass of water. She said that asking him to focus on his breathing usually helped calm him.
“No, he’s not!,” Colin said of his father. “He’s a f****** German. He’s killed people.” He then told his father: “That’s what you deserve.”
