Leftist politician Sahra Wagenknecht has emerged as kingmaker in Germany’s eastern regional governments

Local politicians trying to form a functioning government in the east German state of Thuringia have come up with a highly graphic way of describing their coalition negotiations. “This is no love match,” one official said. “More like an arranged marriage — with this crazy mother-in-law always in the background.” The mother-in-law in question is Sahra Wagenknecht, a former communist who has lobbed the ideological equivalent of a Molotov cocktail into Germany’s postwar political system.

In Saxony, too, a “blackberry” tie-up between the BSW, SPD and CDU — so-called because of the parties’ colours: purple, red and black — is likely. But talks in Thuringia on a similar “blackberry” alliance have been bumpy, complicated by the rift that opened up between Wagenknecht and her local representatives in the state. At issue was the wording of a potential coalition deal.
