A 64-year-old woman has been living out of her kitchen and bedroom for months after having to close off her lounge due to severe damp and mould. After a boiler leak from the upstairs apartment went unnoticed for several weeks, Jane Clarke, of Carlton, found that mould was starting to appear in her front room.
After a month nothing had happened so she chased Accent Housing, to whom she pays £469 in rent each month, for an update. Another surveyor was later sent to the property, and it was confirmed that the problem was being caused by the above flat’s boiler overflow leaking down the external wall. She feels an industrial dehumidifier is needed due to the extent of the mould, which is covering the walls and furniture in the room. Due to this, Jane has shut off her lounge and is unable to go in there for health reasons. She suffers from arthritis, fibromyalgia and vertigo.
"She is pretty much living out of the bedroom and kitchen because she can't go in the front room, it's too unhealthy. As soon as you enter the flat you can tell, you can smell it and feel it all over. It's just exhausting for her. It's like a constant fight with them and I don't know why."
