The Dungeon Club on Stanford Street became the place for teenagers to go to listen to new records or watch live bands perform
Nottingham has been home to a number of popular and much-loved nightclubs over the years, from Rock City in Talbot Street to The Palais, which is reopening under this name in Lower Parliament Street. We've seen many come and go, becoming urban legends in their own right, such as The Garage on St James' Street and Astoria on Greyfriar Street.
Today, the building serves as offices near the Broad Marsh site, giving no hint of its past life as a bustling nightclub in the '60s and '70s. Before the club's inception, Nottingham's teenagers had limited options for socialising, with many resorting to youth clubs or dance halls like The Sherwood Rooms or Palais Le Dance. Eager for venues where they could enjoy music not readily available on mainstream radio, hundreds would flock to this compact club.
One evening, the club-goers were taken aback when a double-decker bus pulled up and more than a hundred policemen stormed into the building. The police had decided to raid the club in search of drugs but were taken aback by the sheer number of people inside the venue. The legend of Dungeon Club is enriched by an anecdote involving the famous nightclub entrepreneur, Peter Stringfellow. Before his fame soared, he guest DJ'ed at the Dungeon Club.
