Advanced Navigation, a Sydney deep-tech company backed by Malcolm Turnbull, is scaling up a factory that helps NASA navigate when there’s no GPS.

Xavier Orr, co-founder and CEo of Advanced Navigation, shows off the Boreas X90 that will be used in several of NASA’s upcoming moon missions. The factory, which Industry Minister Ed Husic will open on Tuesday, is built on a huge, vibration-resistant concrete slab so the company’s ultra-sensitive navigation equipment can be properly calibrated before it is sent out to customers that include NASA, Lockheed Martin, Airbus and Boeing.
Advanced Navigation’s system relies on what’s known in physics as the “Sagnac effect”, in which two light beams, split from the same source and travelling around the same fibre-optic loop but in opposite directions to each other, arrive back at their source at different times if the source itself is in motion.
