MPs have voted to legalise assisted dying as Kim Leadbeater's bill passes a first Commons hurdle

Labour MP Kim Leadbeater’s proposals would allow terminally ill people with less than six months to live to seek medical assistance to end their life in a historic change to UK law, following a deeply divisive debate on the issue within Parliament and among the public.

Pro-legal assisted dying supporters demonstrate in front of Parliament as MPs debate the assisted dying bill “Then it comes back to the House and other members could put in amendments then as well,” the MP for East Wiltshire said. But Ms Leadbeater told the Commons on Friday the process could take up to two years for the bill to become law. After the bill passed its second reading in the Commons on Friday, it will first go to the committee stage where a group of around 16-20 MPs can table amendments.

After this, it would face a third reading and another Commons vote which, if passed, would see it sent to the House of Lords for consideration.
