The NHS frontline is gripped by a 'perfect storm' of equipment, bed and staff shortages. Summer is traditionally the time when NHS staff have a bit of a respite before the inevitable winter crisis. Not so this year. 🔴 PMGallagher1, AasmaDay report:

“They are also less likely to improve their pain in the long-term having waited for so long, so operations are less effective as a result as we’re not able to intervene in a timely fashion,” Dr Bhagawati says.

Covid remains lurking in the background – there are still 7,655 infected patients being treated in UK hospitals – and although coronavirus rates are lower when someone does have the virus, infection control implications mean each Covid patient requires a “six-man resource”, as Dr Bhagawati says. Not only are patients waiting longer but staff vacancies are rising sharply. Grim statistics released this week showed NHS vacancies in England at a “staggering” new high with. The record high of 132,139 was a big increase on the 105,855 vacancies three months earlier, quarterly personnel figures show.

“Junior doctors who started work in the pandemic look at friends from university on better pay working better hours and ask themselves whether it will always be like is and what the upside is? It’s only so long your goodwill lasts in these situations. The problems the NHS is facing are affecting patients and staff alike. It’s not a sustainable situation.”
