From hobbits to . . . well, more hobbits, the 2004 Academy Awards really belonged to one movie.

The tape I am working off of features some of E!’s red carpet footage, from the era of Joan Rivers. Nicole Kidman, winner of the previous year’s best actress trophy, is the first victim. Kidman tells Rivers that she is wearing Chanel. Rivers then asks, “Do you represent them?” Kidman, seemingly bored and unhappy, says, “I’m doing a campaign for them for No. 5, but I don’t represent them, no.” Rivers keeps asking questions, but Kidman wanders over the BBC, hoping for something of more substance.

Something of an odd match, but whatever. Peter Weir seems pleased as ever. Oh boy! It’s best supporting actress time. Last year’s supporting actor winner, Chris Cooper, announces the nominees: Shohreh Aghdashloo for House of Sand and Fog, Patricia Clarkson for Pieces of April, Marcia Gay Harden for Mystic River, Holly Hunter for Thirteen, and Renée Zellweger for Cold Mountain.
