Actor Hugh Laurie, known for his roles in The Night Manager and House, is about to take on a brand new thriller that is based on espionage

The Night Manager star Hugh Laurie is set to take on a significant part in a major new thriller. The BBC and MGM+ have revealed an extensive new cast for Legacy of Spies, the forthcoming espionage drama from The Ink Factory, drawn from the works of John le Carré.

Among the newly announced names are Hugh, renowned for The Night Manager and House, alongside Joe Alwyn, whose recent work spans The Brutalist and The Favourite. Laurie will portray Control, the commanding head of the Circus, while Alwyn steps into the role of veteran intelligence officer Jim Prideaux. Joining them are Anjana Vasan as intelligence analyst Connie Sachs, Charlotte Richie in the role of Ann Smiley, and Lee Ross as Inspector Oliver Mendel.

Rounding out the cast are James McArdle as Percy Alleline, John Dagleish as Roy Bland, and Goran Bogdan as Toby Esterhase. Adam Hugill has additionally been confirmed as Fawn, a lethal operative tasked with safeguarding George Smiley, reports the Express. The eight-part series is adapted from le Carré's celebrated novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, incorporating elements from his subsequent work, A Legacy of Spies.

Penned by Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram, the production marks the long-anticipated return of iconic spy George Smiley to the small screen. The cast is headed by Matthew Macfadyen as George Smiley, with Charlie Hunnam portraying intelligence officer Alec Leamas. The ensemble also includes Daniel Brühl, Dan Stevens, Jake Dunn, Ariyon Bakare and numerous others.

On the directorial front, celebrated filmmaker Claudia Llosa, an Academy Award nominee and Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear recipient, will collaborate with lead director and executive producer Michael Lennox on the series. Stephen and Simon Cornwell stated: "We are delighted to have Academy Award nominee and Golden Bear winner Claudia Llosa bring her vision and cinematic sensibility to Legacy. Her joining Michael on directorial duties has only compounded what is shaping up to be a truly remarkable production.

"To be reunited with Hugh Laurie and Joe Alwyn as Control and Prideaux is a remarkable privilege as we build out the world of the Circus. "It's wonderful to welcome Hugh into a new dimension of the le Carré universe alongside his brilliant portrayal of Richard Roper in The Night Manager, and we're thrilled that Joe, who we first worked with on Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, is now joining us in this momentous undertaking as well.

" The duo continued by expressing that the production has exceeded all expectations. Prior to embarking on various new television projects, actor Hugh Laurie appeared in The Night Manager season 2, which delivers significant revelations about the true fate of his character. Laurie received widespread praise for his performance as Richard Roper in the first season, and it was initially reported that his involvement in the follow-up would be limited to off-screen duties as an executive producer. However, that turned out not to be the case.
