Nottingham residents are being warned about a scam named after their city, known as the 'Nottingham Knockers'. This scam involves doorstep callers who offer a selection of household products for sale.
The scam works by the scammer purchasing a bag of goods from their employer and keeping any profit made above this price. They then sell these goods to homeowners at inflated prices, using the sale as an opportunity to assess the individual's home and gullibility. If the money received is crumpled, they accept it and move on. However, if the note is crisp, flat and new, they engage the person in further conversation to gather more information about them.
The scammer also takes a sniff of the note as they depart. A slightly musty smell is a sign that there may be more cash in the property.
