Crowds in London, Cardiff and Birmingham faced the worst of the conditions as they headed out to celebrate the coronation

Westminster Abbey and the Mall endured downpours throughout the service as thousands of people watched the King on his way to ascend to the throne.

In Hyde Park, Mary Davis and Carol Sills from Bedfordshire hid under umbrellas, ponchos and plastic bags while watching the procession. In front of Buckingham Palace, people housed in a 3,800-capacity grandstand erupted into cheers after an announcement that “coronation day is here”, at about 8.30am. Birmingham was beset with particularly awful conditions, forcing spectators to hide below tents due to the heavy rain.: “I’m actually only here because Tim loves the Royals. Personally, I’d rather be at home with a hot cuppa and a biscuit but that’s just me.”

“I understand why the younger generation think William and Catherine should have proceeded, but I think we have to give him our support. Supporting the Royal Family is like fine wine: you appreciate it more as you get older.” Retired teachers John and Tracy for Abergavenny, criticised the cost of proceedings during the cost of Living crisis.
