Why NCAA tourney expansion could be bad for Cinderellas
The NCAA Tournament, what many consider the best sporting event this side of the Atlantic if not the entire planet, will likely expand in the near future. More teams means more opportunities for Cinderella stories, right?The NCAA Division I Transformation Committee submitted an official recommendation last month to the D-I Board of Directors that the tournament increase its postseason field to 25 percent of participating institutions.
More teams also means more games, which makes the Cinderella path for a mid-major, like Saint Peter’s last year, a longer one. It’s a sad irony: Teams like Saint Peter’s, Butler or even pre-powerhouse Gonzaga probably don’t win our hearts if the tournament didn’t expand to 32 teams in 1975 and then to 64 in 1985. Now, a possible 96-team tournament could send lower-tier schools back into isolation.
