The story erupted on Friday evening when Brussels public prosecutor announced that police had raided 16 homes and arrested four people they said had committed “alleged offences of criminal organisation, corruption and money laundering”. Details were initially withheld, but it later emerged that European Parliament vice president Eva Kaili was amongst those hauled in for questioning, with police saying they confiscated a bag with €600,000 in cash, as well as computers, phones and other evidence.
Top EU figures have been quick to express their outrage and distance themselves from the scandal. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the allegations “are of the most concern, very serious”. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who suspended Ms Kaili, accompanied Belgian police as they searched the home of another MEP, Belgium’s Marc Tarabella on Saturday.
