Charles and Diana married in July 1981 but split in 1992 and divorced four years later.
Princess Diana and Charles' marriage came to an end after a brutal letter from the Queen allowed their divorce to go ahead. The pair married more than 40 years ago, on July 29, 1981, in a beautiful ceremony that had the entire nation enraptured, reports the Mirror.
In 1995, the late Diana gave her bombshell BBC Panorama interview, where she delivered the famous line: "There were three of us in this marriage", referring to Camilla, Charles' long-term infatuation and future wife. This interview hit the Royal Family with a bang, and launched them into a crisis - prompting the Queen to allow the pair to finally divorce. The Queen wrote in the letter: "I have consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury and with the prime minister and, of course, with Charles, and we have decided that the best course for you is divorce."
The letter reportedly annoyed Diana at the time, as she felt she was being forced to agree to a divorce, despite not initially wanting one. Days later, Buckingham Palace formally announced the divorce in a statement saying, "after considering the present situation the Queen… gave them their view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable".
