Conservative Liberal MPs from Queensland and Western Australia look set to control a key pitch against the Voice to parliament, after legislation for the referendum passed its first parliamentary test.

Known as “authorised dissenters”, the group includes former speaker Andrew Wallace, and MPs Scott Buchholz, Rick Wilson, Henry Pike, Luke Howarth and Tony Pasin. The group voted no, alongside all Nationals members, who are opposed to the Voice.the Liberal Party supported the bill in order for the referendum to go ahead, but criticised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s approach to the vote.“My main concerns are that the proposal lacks detail.
“This sort of all or nothing approach that’s been taken by Labor is really going to set back reconciliation.”
