Written by a former Merseyside police officer, this crime drama still refuses to coddle its audience
‘Martin Freeman as Chris is completely believable as a man whose mind is hanging by a thread’ is all about repeat offenders stuck in a spiral of impossible decisions. It is full of people bargaining with themselves: if I just do X then Y will be sorted. Rarely do they make the right call; frequently the consequences of a wrong one are disastrous., the first series was a huge hit in 2022, although its tidy ending didn’t automatically lend itself to a follow-up.
Work continues to churn up an endless procession of troubled souls, he hardly sees his daughter, his ex is shacked up with her new man , and the day job he craves is off the table, largely – his boss tells him – because “everybody thinks you’re a knobhead”.Still, Chris is trying to be better. He’s attending a men’s therapy group where he berates himself for making “the same f***ing mistakes over and over again”.
After the unexpected discovery of a gun and Chris’s decision to dispose of it, he ends up £10k in debt to another violent drug dealer, Franny , and embarks on a frantic race to find the money as the neon lights of shopfronts and petrol stations bounce off his eyebags. Once again it is Emily Fairn and Josh Finan, as reckless young down-and-outs Casey and Marco, who occupy the tragic heart of the show, in particular Marco’s gut-wrenching storyline as an out-of-his-depth new dad perilously close to losing his daughter to the care system.is still tense and dense, and it can be disorienting to piece together all these broken people, like fragments of a shattered mirror held up to society.
