The Man United academy graduate has come a long way in a short space of time
From the fields of Cheadle to the England set-up in the space of a few years, Kobbie Mainoo's rise might seem stark to many, but it's been far from surprising to those familiar with him.
It wasn't just Mainoo's performance in the dramatic FA Cup victory that changed Southgate's mind. Anyone who has watched him since he broke into the United first team would struggle to deny his talent, would fail to notice the composure and calm with which he plays the game.ALSO READ: Kobbie Mainoo has shown Man United what midfielder to sign
Mainoo would probably have become a regular in the United team even sooner this season had it not been for injuries, after impressing in pre-season. The signs in the summer and even further back were that Erik ten Hag was suitably impressed with the young lad from Cheadle Hulme, in Stockport. There's a huge chasm, of course, between junior football and making the grade at United. But Mainoo was sought-after by scouts from Manchester's main professional clubs even as a six-year-old. He began attending sessions at the United Foundation and the next decade was a story of success after success, Mainoo clearing every hurdle that was presented to him.
“For any young player at Manchester United, it’s a real challenge. The signs are that Kobbie is coping with that challenge but it’s important that everyone remains grounded. Kobbie has put in some really eye-catching performances but it’s still early days for him."
