The Royal Family can't project moral leadership while drawing talent from narrow social pools 🔵 The monarchy is fundamentally unsustainable and increasingly vulnerable to digital scrutiny ✍️ KateMaltby for ipaperviews
Generally, if you don’t want to make a new acquaintance feel there’s a neon sign above their head flashing “OTHER”, try not to make your very first question one that zeroes in on racial difference from a dream of white indigeneity. If they want to tell you a family story of migration as you pleasantly get to know each other – a perfectly valid subject of conversation – they will choose to do so in their own time.
Nothing could be more bogus. Of course it is appropriate that victims of domestic violence should be able to access help from other women who understand their background. What has agitated most of Fulani’s critics, however, is that the royal aide in question is Lady Susan Hussey, who is 83. Hussey has served the Royal Family for decades: as one of the late Queen’s closest friends, she was the only person who sat with her in the miserable car-ride last April between Windsor Castle and the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.
Hussey’s defenders have a point. It is rare that an aristocratic octogenarian – daughter of an earl, wife of the former chairman of the BBC – is a model of racial sensitivity. And yet, for years the Royal Family has surrounded itself with such people. This is not something of which to be proud. Instead, it exposes a problem at the very heart of any hereditary monarchy.
