Experts have warned businesses to be vigilant to the new scam as they could lose thousands of pounds
Those who are not wary of the HMRC scam could lose thousands or tens of thousands of pounds are using firms details – including bank account numbers and personal information about directors – to fill in forms which are then sent to HMRC, pretending they were sent on behalf of the business, requesting a change of bank details.it is likely the data is being gathered from commercial documents or through phishing emails and letters sent to businesses falsely claiming they are from HMRC.
Firms that are VAT registered can also reclaim some of the VAT on the goods and services purchased by their business. Mr Pearce said that any VAT registered business, tax agent, or advisor, receiving such a letter from HMRC, should immediately check HMRC’s online account confirm that the bank details are still correct.
