Doctors are turning to a drug more commonly associated with weight loss to tackle loss of another kind: brain function

Results from August showed that diabetes patients receiving semaglutide had a lower risk of Alzheimer’s – a degenerative condition which leads to the progressive loss of brain cells, affecting memory and other cognitive functions. But until relatively recently, researchers have been at a loss for potential ways of halting it in its tracks.

Working with 88 healthy, older adults known to be at an elevated risk of Alzheimer’s, the researchers are using an orally administered drug to see whether it inhibits toxic protein aggregation and reduced levels of harmful inflammation within the brain. The drug they’re using? “My opinion is that GLP-1 drugs have potential to prevent people developing Alzheimer’s in the first place,” says Koychev. “This is based on strong data coming from the real-world use of these drugs.”

“I think that the general health improvement in many respects means that the likelihood of these drugs having a positive impact on reducing risk of dementia or cognitive impairment is pretty good,” says Peterson.Paul Edison is perhaps the UK’s leading expert when it comes to understanding the protective effects of GLP-1 drugs on the brain.

Edison says that these neuroprotective effects may not only benefit Alzheimer’s patients, but they could also help people with other forms of dementia as well as those with Parkinson’s disease. Again, that GLP-1 drugs may be able to help prevent the accumulation of a toxic form of alpha synuclein, a protein which gathers in the brains of Parkinson’s patients in damaging clumps called Lewy bodies.

However Koyshev argues that while lifestyle is important for reducing dementia risk, there has yet to be any study which has proven that sustained behavioural alterations in midlife can lead to a meaningful reduction in dementia cases.
