While most people in Scotland are currently making preparations for Halloween on Tuesday, one Scottish town will be celebrating the spooky holiday a lot sooner.

While countries all over the world have their own unique traditions — and Scotland certainly has more than a few — one constant across the vast majority of places is the day that the holiday takes place.

Kilmarnock, situated in Ayrshire, has the unique distinction of having Halloween on the last Friday of October every year rather than October 31. This year, the special day — known as Killieween — falls this Friday. While it may sound odd at first, Killieween certainly has its fair share of advantages. For example, celebrating Halloween on a Friday each year means that most people will never need to worry about getting up for work or school the next day and so can party to their heart's content.

As for theories to how Killieween originally came about, some believe it goes all the way back to Halloween's Gaelic origins, while other say it is to do with Kilmarnock's industrial past. With the last Friday of each month traditionally being payday, celebrating Halloween on this day meant that more of the town's residents would have the cash to celebrate.
