The Simpsons has been a TV staple for 35 years and its loyal fanbase has only just realised a hidden meaning in the iconic opening credits - and it all centres around baby Maggie

The Simpsons has been gracing our screens for a whopping 35 years - but some fans are only just discovering why little Maggie is scanned at the supermarket checkout during the show's iconic intro.

However, only the most observant fans will have spotted the 'value' that flashes up on the checkout when the worker scans through the family's usual groceries. But when the Simpsons updated its opening credits in 2009, the cash register changes from $243.26 , to $486.52 when Maggie is added to the total.

"While The Simpsons' opening credits could've changed the cash register display with an updated figure, this too would've been outdated before long. The decision to show Marge's total doubling might've been made to signify that kids cost a lot, but without committing to a specific number."
