TRAGEDY AT SEA: The sinking of the Rothsay Castle near Beaumaris was one of the worst maritime disasters to take place off Angleseyoff Moelfre, in 1859 would be the one most likely to come to mind, but in 1831 there was another marine tragedy where most of the passengers died.was built in 1816, and was originally used for service on the River Clyde, in Scotland.
The captain was drunk and unwilling to consider going back, as there"would be no profit". Even when the passengers said they would relinquish any claim for a refund of their fares, and some even offering further pecuniary rewards for a return to port, the captain showed no desire to consider their wishes, and was even brutal in his replies to them.
The captain still refused to send any signals of distress, or even to hang out a light. It was reckoned by practical men at, Anglesey, that if he had done so then all the passengers could have been saved, but as a result of his obstinacy the ship drifted further off course.Llanfairfechan
